Buffon ready to step down if Gattuso fails

Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has confirmed he will step down as head of the Italian national team’s delegation if Gennaro Gattuso fails to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup.

    Buffon was reportedly considering a number of high-profile options, including Jose Mourinho and even bringing back Roberto Mancini, but decided to go with Gattuso. Who he is prepared to take responsibility for if he fails.

    Buffon denied he had threatened to resign if Italy recalled Mancini, saying: “My contract ends on June 30 of every year, so resigning is not a problem.”     

    “We chose Reno after consulting with the president and other experts. I don’t think there is a good or bad coach at this level, but it is a coach who works according to the team’s needs. It is a good time for Reno to be the national team coach.”

    “This is a responsibility. Time will tell if it’s right or not. If the decision is wrong, you have to take a step back.”
